This happened to me when I was going to Delhi during my undergraduate days. I was at the railway station waiting for my train. I saw a man coming towards me. He was in a hurry. He seemed a little frenzy. He started saying in a haste tone, "I am in a big problem, please help me, actually what happened...".
To which I said, "If you are in big problem, do not waste your time in telling me what happened. Just tell me what can I do? How can I help you?"
He seemed a bit confused. He looked at me, then tried once more, "Actually I was going to...", "I don't want to know what happened to you", I told him. Just tell me how can I help me? He was now very much at unease. He really wanted to tell me the story. But, When I almost refused to hear his story, He asked, Hesitatingly, "100 rupees please!" I gave him 100 rupees.
But he was looking at me when he was going away. Then, another man came, said, "My god, I am in a huge problem." I again said, do not waste time in storytelling, just let me know How can I help you?"
This guy was more confused. He could not understand what I said. He said, "I am telling the truth, please listen to me". I said, "Yes, I totally believe you, why would you lie? that's why I am telling you, just ask me how I can help?"
He said, "200 rupees please", and he saw in complete disbelief that I took my wallet and gave him 200 rupees. He went away but was not satisfied. He could not tell me his story.
Finally, a third person came. And he said, "I am in a huge problem", I asked him, "How much?", since I knew he was the same guy as the previous two, just he came after changing his clothes. And I saw him losing his calm, he said, "Are you an idiot? Don't you get it that I am the same person who came for 200 and 100 rupees earlier?"
I said to him, "I know you are the same person, but I think you do not understand that in all these three times, I am the same person you asked help from, I trust you". He saw me in complete distrust and said, "You are surely a lunatic", he gave me my 300 rupees and was going away. But now I was interested.
I started following him, I asked him, "But wait, didn't you say you need help?". He was cursing me, "Leave me alone, you crazy ass motherfucker!" But I really wanted to know, why he returned my 300 rupees.
When he saw that I was persistently following that guy, he turned back and threatened me with a knife that he will kill me. I said, "Ok, I will go, but I just wanted to know, why you returned me the money? you could have stolen it, you already fooled me, didn't you?"
He lost himself completely, "you idiot! just take your money and go, I can fool an intelligent man but I cannot fool a fool! that's injustice! and If you trusted me this blindly, which no one did ever in my life, not even my wife, how can I break your trust?"
He turned emotional there. I thought he will kiss me now and will confess that he loves me, but then an announcement of my train coming came. I turned back and I said, thank you for my 300 rupees and a short story that one day I will write. What is your good name? He said, "Rajesh".
Ok, Rajesh, best of luck for your future endeavors. And we departed. I don't know, but I might have destroyed that thief's robbery career.
